Nerikes fire Brigade is an organization that handles emergencies in eight municipalities in Örebro County, Sweden. Today it has 450 employees, of whom around 100 are full-time. the organization is based on 27 fire stations, covering an area of approximately 150 x 80 kilometers, and it has more than one hundred vehicles in its fleet. the organization, based on several smaller fire departments, delivers economies of scale and smart use of resources. instead of running local departments, the public receives a better service at the same or lower cost. a larger organization is better able to allocate resources where they are most needed on a daily basis. another advantage is the overall need for fewer vehicles and spare vehicles within the organization.
With a large organization spread across a wide geographical area, a functional communication system is essential. “today we chase seconds during an emergency rescue operation, time means a lot. Moreover, we need to save time safely while maintaining quality. We cannot drive vehicles faster; we need to cut time by incorporating smarter systems,” says Magnus Bern, fire and technical Manager at Nerikes fire Brigade.
